There was trouble in paradise during the winter of 2008/2009 when a spell of bad weather tore up the North Shore with several weeks of rain, stormy seas, and zero water clarity. Clark was grounded and getting restless. Driving by Laniakea, the sun finally came out and Clark was in the water in minutes. "There's a little bridge at Laniakea over a stream that flows red dirt down from the hills and fields, and turns the ocean red," Clark said. In more populated areas, where pollution is a problem, red water like this prompts a warning sign that says: After a Rain, You Must Refrain. Not so much on the North Shore: "So I swam out and got this," Clark said. "When I showed it to my wife, she told me to put antiseptic ointment on all my cuts."
